Volvo electric trucks can meet a wide range of transport needs. According to the company, half of all freight transport in the EU can already be electrified, and national and international hauliers are showing considerable interest in electric vehicles. They want to be more environmentally friendly, and their customers are also interested in a cleaner environment.

Three new trucks in the portfolio

The three models that will be fully electric are:

  • Volvo FH for intercity transport,
  • Volvo FM for local and regional distribution,
  • Volvo FMX for construction transport.

All have a range of up to 300 km, a battery capacity of up to 540 kWh, a maximum torque of 2400 Nm and a set weight of up to 44 tons. This differs from previous FE electric models with a weight of 27 tons and FL with 16 tons.

For Europe, these three models will begin production in the second half of next year.

Volvo Trucks' goals are bold

Roger Alm, President of Volvo Trucks, said their goal was to electrify freight transport in Europe and other parts of the world. They have set their own milestone, by 2030 they want electric vehicles to make up half of their sales.

It strives to make the transition to electrified transport as easy as possible for its customers, offering a complete ecosystem with financing, maintenance and service.

Plans for the future are given

So the goal is to increase sales of electrified models by 2030, but what next? The goal is to develop trucks that would be able to travel much longer distances on a single charge. Volvo Trucks wants to achieve this with hydrogen fuel cells. He wants to start selling vehicles with these fuel cells in the second half of this decade. This could also be an important milestone and the reason why more carriers are electrifying freight transport.
